Proviso Scene and Prenuptial Agreements
The proviso scene between Mirabell and Millamont in Act 4 of The Way of the World is not only a battle of wits between the characters, but is also an insight into the desires and fears of the couple. The arrangements made between a betrothed couple illustrate what the individuals do and do not want from their relationship. The terms of the proviso scene in The Way of the World can be easily compared to modern prenuptial agreements to see the differences and similarities between marriages in the 1700s and today.
